Subject: [*] 500 Name Database
This is a database (text file) of 500 first names, compiled from various
sources. Some male and some female, mostly American. Some famous, most are
ordinary.
What would you use it for? Well, I wanted a bunch of proper names to add to
the dictionary of some anagram-creation software, so the software would
output more humorous anagrams.
You could also add this list to a spell checker's user dictionary, to
reduce the number of false alarms. I guess you could name your next baby
using this list, too!
This list is freeware, and may be included in a Info-Mac CD-ROM. You may
also sell it on the open market for vast sums of money and get rich. :-)

JUNO Librarian is an application for the Macintosh which allows you
to make up library of voice data for JUNO106. One window has one voice
data, and you can open windows as many as you want.
When this application receives bulk dump MIDI data, new window will
open and show you it's parameter.
What's changed in 1.0.4:
OMS (Opcode MIDI System) support.
Inline Input support under Kanji (Japanese) System7.
Requirement :
System7 + QuickTime or System7.1

FROM gonzalez@crab.rutgers.edu (Ralph Gonzalez)
Animals+Sound is a HyperCard 2.0 (or later) stack for introducing
young children (as young as 1 yr old!) to the Mac. It is pretty
much bulletproof, and offers options to hide the desktop (to
prevent accidental application switching under System 7). It is
basically a point-and-click collection of animal art and sounds.
It also has a "Small Kids Mode" which lets very young kids
navigate through by simply clicking (without pointing). I hope
your kids like it! Freeware.

Subject: [*] BlackOut 1.1
"BlackOut" is a screensaver for those who use two screens and
want to save their extensions screen.
"Normal" screensavers cover the whole visible area of the
srceen(s) and do their work in idle-times. BlackOut is an
application, which works task-friendly in the background
while it blanks the second screen (and shows the current time).
Windows on this screen are shown as usual. This application
takes 34 Kb in RAM and 18 Kb on disk.
"BlackOut" is free of charge.
New features:
- the startup-animation now can be switched off in order to
accelerate the startup-process.
Old features changed (Bugfixes:-):
- fixed a handle which was dereferenced twice,
- added a 'mstr'-resource to enable the Finder to quit the
program with non-German system software;
- the preferences file will now be named as "BlackOut Prefs";
(instead of "BlackBox Prefs" - for those, who wondered. This
name came from an earlier stage of development and remained
incorrect).
Thanks to Leonard G. Burton, California, for his comments and
suggestions.

Subject: [*] ChainStorEaze-1.01Demo.sit --file submission
Version 1.01 of the Group-A-Ware Chain-Stor-Eaze.
Update fixes:
There was a minor problem when starting a new chainstory: the counter was
not updating, thus reducing the demo version to only two users in reality.
This has been now fixed.
Requires: Hypercard 2.x, System 6.05 (& up) & a Printer (optional).
What is the Group-A-Ware Chain-Stor-Eaze=A9=81
You are invited to participate in a Chain-Stor-Eaze Project. You will
start the story with the first paragraph. You will append a new sentence
to this paragraph. This is the next participant's task: to continue the
chain.
Each participant will be responsible for adding one paragraph and one main
idea sentence to the story. The story will go to each participant with a
new main idea sentence to be developed by that participant. When the
paragraph is complete, that participant will be able to shape the next
paragraph of the story by creating the new main idea for that paragraph and
sending to the next participant on the list. (In the above, you can
substitute *Individual*, *group* or *Classroom* or *school* in place of
*participant*. The procedure is the same, just the recipient changes).
Starting with the administrator and continuing until the story has made one
complete circuit through the list of individuals (Group, class, school).
This activity may be done within a classroom (individuals or groups), or
done with groups between Classroom(s) , or, should your school have
file-sending capabilities, between schools (over either a BBS system, or
internet.) The schools could be within varying geographic areas.
Limits in Demo version: restricted to 3 users. Otherwise complete.

Subject: [*] Checksum 1.1
Wouldn't it be nice to know that the file you downloaded is what it
should be? How about a way to check whether your files have changed
over time without you knowing it?
Here is Checksum for the Macintosh, version 1.1. Checksum is the
ultimate Macintosh application for calculating checksums for a file.
This utility is fully compatible with the Unix(tm) "sum" program (and
the POSIX "cksum" program). It can be used to verify that files
transferred between machines match by comparing checksum values
instead of transferring the files and comparing the actual files
themselves. It is even smart enough to translate end-of-line
characters between Unix, MS-DOS and Macintosh 'TEXT' files. Checksum
is the easiest way to compare files on the Macintosh, either on the
same system or on different machines.
Fully System 7 and 32-bit addressing compatible, including balloon
help and "drag and drop" capability. It will run under either
System 6 or System 7 on a Mac Plus or higher.
New in this release is the RSA MD5 checksum algorithm, more display
options, benchmarking capability, as well as all known bugs fixed.
Checksum is business-ware: it is freeware for personal use on a
single CPU and for educational institutions for instructional uses,
but it is shareware ($5) for use in a business, corporation,
organization or government. Site license information is also included.
Verify this file when you download it against its default checksum
value using Checksum or with the Unix "sum" command ("sum -r" on
System V):

CheeseToast is a Maelstrom/Asteroids-inspired game I wrote to teach
myself how to do sprite-movement on the Macintosh. I hope you like
it. Feel free to replace the sprites and/or sounds.
This archive contains the (uncommented, undocumented) Think C source
code as an aid to Programmers who are interested in such things.
To run the game, you only need the application "Cheese Toast" and the
file "CT Resources".
CheeseToast requires a color mac with a 12" monitor or larger and
32-bit Quickdraw.
CheeseToast is free. The reason CheeseToast is free is because I
don't have time to a) Polish It and b) Handle technical support or
programming questions.
Please don't include CheeseToast or it's source code in Shareware
collections that cost money without receiving my permission.
If you would like to do a major revision of CheeseToast, let me know!
Changes for version 1.0.1:
Cheese Toast now runs correctly on 12 inch monitors, and it centers
properly on monitors larger than 13 inches.
I fixed an opening audio glitch that was happening on machines with
Sound Mgr 3.0.
Sprite rendering has been sped up a bit.

Subject: [*] Co-OOPs-1.0demo.sit -file submission
Co-OOPs is a simulated groupware environment for students to use in schools
which do not posess the high-tech equiptment to enable real groupwork.
This Archive contains a shareware version of Co-OOPs=A9 by Simulnet=81. Thi=
s
is a series of Hypercard stacks which were designed for educational use
with two specific objectives in mind. You will need Hypercard Player or
Hypercard 2.x to run these stacks. Macintalk, a system extension enabling
speech synthesis is also preferred. The Co-OOPs system will function
without Macintalk, but uses speech extensively.
A. To act as a primer with which to enable children to learn some basic
Workgroup skills. The stacks are comprised of regular log-in procedures,
password protection. This system goes beyond regular text messages in that
it allows the users to access sounds, graphics, databases from within their
prime documents. The documents are presented as stories for the students
to build. The document may also be a project or presentation. These
documents are collaborative efforts on the parts of any users on the net.
Co-OOPs=A9 handles these documents much in the same way as PowerTalk and
Object-Oriented Operating Systems will in the near future. Co-OOPs=A9, in
essence, is a document-based network operating system with characteristics
akin to a distributed hypermedia system, albeit simulated. Up to 60 users
may participate. (the number is actually not limiting--just that
performance degrades once exceeding this number). The problem often
confronted by teachers and students is that sometimes the hardware becomes
available BEFORE there is a foundation for it's use. Thus many a time
networked systems are introduced that act as no more than simple file and
printer servers. Co-OOPs=A9 is designed to instill in the students the basi=
c
desire and thinking habits necessary for effective messaging between
participants, and for effective workgroup collaborative computing.
B. To enable both the teachers and students who do not have access to
modems, phone lines, networked computers, or funds, to start in the
excitement of networking. Because Co-OOPs=A9 functions on a single computer=
,
(it is a multi-user asynchronous network model), it requires little
investment in terms of hardware, nor training. With a simple Mac Plus, a
hard disk and printer, the students and teachers can start to investigate
some of the techniques and problems encountered with network use. Co-OOPs=
=A9
does not simulate any single networking scheme. Rather it provides a
simple model which allows the users to network together , now, without
having to worry about learning techniques required with specific systems,
nor face the hardware constraints which are often inevitable. It is more a
model to develop the *culture* of networking than a specific training tool.
As such, it is also useful in the situation of being a primer for the
students so that they do not eat up too much bandwith nor time on the real
nets until they learn some basic skills, both computer and messaging.
Co-OOPs is Shareware. If you intend to continue use of Co-OOPs=A9 please
fill out the relevant licencing registration form enclosed at the end of
this file. Co-OOPs=A9 is not public domain, nor to be considered freeware, i=

means you wish.

Subject: [*] CTerm 2.2
Do you have the need to connect to an IBM mainframe from home? CTerm may be
the product you need. It enables dial-up connections to IBM mainframes
through IBM (or compatible) protocol converters such as the 7171 or 3174
with the appropriate dial-up support.
All that is needed is a modem, the Communication Toolbox (or System 7, since
the CommToolbox is built-in), and a connection tool (such as Apple's
modem tool).
CTerm implements the same terminal emulation as IBM's FTTerm software, often
referred to as Async 3270 or IBM 3101 emulation (it is actually an "extended
subset" of the 3101 emulation).
Two other software packages exist for the Mac to perform this function; both
are commercial products which are fairly expensive. CTerm is shareware. If
you find it useful, a modest $20 registration fee is requested.
Here's an overview of CTerm's features:
* Completely Mac-like (not some quick port)
* Four-color support, including alternate background colors
* Support for any fixed-width font in any point size
* Pass-through printing from a host through an appropriately-
configured protocol converter
* Uses the extended keyboard to its maximum capabilities, while offering
addition PF key options for those with a standard keyboard
* MINIMAL IND$FILE file download support (this is not a published
protocol; IBM won't disclose it, and I don't have the time to
reverse-engineer it)
Of course, technical support is provided. (But don't expect me to return
phone calls to unregistered users -- I'll talk to you, but not at my
expense.)

Following is the latest release of Default Folder, version 2.47B. It's a
minor bug-fix on top of version 2.47, correcting an error which caused
folders to not be displayed in a few applications' file dialog boxes.
Default Folder is a control panel that allows you to set up default folders
for applications and desk accessories. It also provides pop-up menus in the
standard file dialog (like Directory Assistance or SuperBoomerang) for
navigating between often-used folders and disks and for modifying the
current application's default folder. It also provides a "rebound" feature
which reselects the last file you chose. Default Folder is shareware.

Here's a resub of mortgage-maker. This is also a slightly newer
version (1.0.1). I was pretty mystified when sumex seemed all
unavailable so soon after my submission. And then when I heard about
the hacking, well I thought, dang, am I bad luck or what? I mean I
submit something about once every 6 years, and look what happens?
I made this one a .sit instead of a .sea since that's what umich

have a preference?
---------
Mortgage Maker 1.0.1
Mortgage Maker estimates the monthly payments and closing costs for a
home mortgage. It's free for non-commercial use, but any donations are
cheerfully accepted. It computes the "qualifying ratios" which lenders use
when evaluating a mortgage application. The "Backsolve" feature allows the
program to answer questions like "how much house can I afford?" For
refinances, the program compares the net monthly payment situation with
and without the refinance to help you decide if the refinance is a good idea.
The package includes extensive documentation which describes the program
as well as the basic vocabulary and strategies for qualifying for a mortgage.
Enjoy!

Aquarium Kit (for AfterDark's Fish Module)
The only part of AfterDark's Fish module that I don't like is that it does get
boring after a time and there is no easy way to substantially modify it. I
particularly dislike the fact that most of the fish only move horizontally.
Anyone who has ever looked at real fish will attest that they actually have a
much more interesting lifethey move vertically and diagonally, too!
Now, this problem doesn't rank up there with nuclear war, famine, hurricanes,
or anything like that, but still... .
Anyway, here are some free fixes to this and other annoyances. The "Aquarium
Kit" will give you little turtles that swim both horizontally and diagonally.
Also, baby sharks (don't worry, they're cute and don't molest the other
fish) flit along the bottom of the aquarium. And the fish bowl floor can
have a new decoration besides that dull fern, or seaweed, or whatever it is.
Now you can have a mound of handsome rocks with small plants that gently wave
in the current (your fish bowl does have tidal currents, doesn't it?).
These items are for 256 color Macs only. Sorry, but I didn't take the time to
fuss with the masks so that other Macs could use these.

Word Family Spelling Planner (Planner) is a program that allows
teachers, educators, and parents to create weekly spelling units based
on either phonics, word families, or themes. The program creates
worksheets with fun and educational activities which can be printed out
and given to the students to complete.
The Planner includes the following features:
*An intelligent way to select words and place them in activities that
make sense.
*The program makes the creation of wordlists and activities for the
whole class, small groups, or individuals much easier and more effective.
It creates 6 activities and can normally be completed within a
half-hour.
*By using the activities, students are learning not only their particular
word-list. They are also learning and reinforcing pattern and phonetic
rule recognition which they can then apply to other words they will
encounter.
*Inludes dynamic wordlists which can have words added or deleted. You
can create your own wordlists , rule-based, or thematic.
*Includes optional printout of pre-tests and tests sheets.
*Allows use of up to 15 words per unit in registered version.
*The program can be used in either a whole-language setting or by those
educators who want to emphasize phonics and word families.
* Addition of clipart is made easy through
a custom clip-art stack, or using standard clipboard procedure. Paint
tools included.
Limits in the Demo: restricted to the use of 5 words and 12 rules-lists,
but allows all activities, printing, etc. The full version allows for 15
words and unlimited number of word-lists.

Subject: ARA Client 2.0 crashes with System 7.0
I installed the ARA Client 2.0 software on my IIsi running system 7.0 (tuned)
but openning the Remote Access Setup control panel bombed into MacsBug with
an illegal instruction exception !!
I re-installed the System from scratch (so no extra INITS etc), re-installed
Network Installer 1.4.2 (-> appletalk v58) and ARA, but still no joy.
The same problem occurs on a MacPlus running tuned 7.0.
The ARA Client manual says it runs under System 7.0 "although 7.1 is
recommended" ... does this mean if you don't want your Mac to crash, go
buy 7.1 ???
Has anyone got ARA 2.0 working under 7.0 ? Any ideas as to what may be
going wrong here ?

Subject: archive/submission plans/ideas
Well, I haven't heard much discussion yet about this so I thought I'd bring
it up.
Have there been plans made yet on how to have submissions and the archives
handle 68k/ppc/fat submissions?
I bring this up so we can try and avoid the problem of 680x0 mac users
downloading pure ppc-native code files that won't run on their systems.
Basically, I submit the following guidelines (for discussion) for
submitting files:
1) Current files in the archives have names like foo.hqx. A user should
always assume this is 68k binary. This is fairly safe as it will at
least run on both. Saves globally renaming all those existing files...
2) PPC-only code files should be named foo.ppc.hqx.
3) Gradually, 68k-only code files should be renamed foo.68k.hqx
4) Fat-binary files (both types of code) should be namedd foo.fat.hqx
5) Header notes should PROMINANTLY state the nature of the code in this
regard.
I also think it might be useful for the short term to have a /info-mac/ppc/
directory for storing an FAQ, bug reports, tip files, utilities, patches,
etc. that are specific to the Power Macintoshes that might be crucial in
the first few months of break-in. Hopefully the intro will go smoothly,
but this could help a lot. Note I don't advocate storing all ppc
applications there, just critical stuff such as drivers, formatters,
patches and most importantly: information.
I am also certain that some might have some better ideas as well out there.
Please open up the old mind valves and let'er flow...
Cheers,
Mel Martinez

I'm thinking of accelerating my girlfriend's Classic. I was particularly

any accelerator chosen to be able to take advantage of a couple of 4MB

Any opinions on this card? Also, with 40MHz, how much of an added
boost--on a cost/benefit basis--are the FPU and cache options?
TIA!

You are looking the wrong place for Mac development jobs. Very few are
actually advertised in the national press, and it is a measure of their
desperation that this company has to do so. If you meet their
requirements, you can probably specify your salary.
There is Mac work to be had: we survived the recession on a diet of Mac
projects alone. Companies may give Windows priority, but the Mac user
base is sufficiently big that it won't be ignored. Indeed my last 2
contracts (and, with luck, the next one :-) involved porting appls to
the Mac from Unix and Windows. One of the things that I do is helping
to run a Mac developer's group in the UK, and in January alone, we had
over a dozen requests from companies looking Mac developers for various
projects. There may be 10 times as many looking for Windows developers,
but there is still a living to be made out of the Mac.

Subject: Lost Icons and Update Temp File (Q)
Hi Info-Mac'rs
I have two questions.
1) The other day after I upgraded to 7.1, I rebuilt my desktop. When I went
to the apple menu the icons for; alarm clock, note pad, puzzle, key caps and
keyfinder were all changed to the generic application icon. What happened
and how do I fix it?
2) In every folder that I open a file called Update Temp appears. I checked
for its type and creator but the boxes are blank. It shows up on the eDisked
drive and sometimes in the non-eDisked partition I have my system on. When it
shows up on my system partition it's in the apple menu folder. Does any one
have any idea what this file does and how it gets in my folders? What should
I do about it?
I'd like to thank everybody who reads info-mac the solutions to my problems in
the past have been great!
Is it proper netiquette to thank each person individually after I get a
response
to my questions? I'm asking because I don't what to take bandwith.

First problem: where to get the logo? Well, I could draw one, or I could

Zilch!
Bit odd, no?
And I don't want to be a party pooper - but do we really need all these
StartupScreen's with nothing to do with Apple? 1) Surely a StartupScreen is a
personal thing 2) Most of the images are likely available on other ftp sites
as GIFS, JPEGS etc. 3) Scanners are darn cheap these days 4) Some of them are
a bit dodgy really aren't they?

Anybody know if the Quadra 800 can display Millions of colors on a 13"
Apple RGB with internal video? One Apple chart I have says 16-bit color
is the max, and another one says 24-bit (with 2 MB of VRAM). Which is right?
Is there some software utility that checks available VRAM slots and tells me
what is actually installed? TattleTale 1.7.4 doesn't do it.
We've got a Quadra 800 that's about a year old and we're trying to
get 24-bit color from an old AppleColor Hi-Res RGB monitor.
I think we have 1 (or 1-1/2?) MB of VRAM -- at any rate it displays 16-bit
(Thousands) and not 24-bit (Millions) of colors. We're doing some graphics
stuff that would work better with 24-bit color -- and besides some of the
PhotoShop utilities on the CD seem to require it.
Also attached to the Quadra is an old Apple 2-page grayscale with 16 grays.
It's got a funky card with what looks like bullet holes in the connector
in place of some of the pins. Can that be upgraded to display 256 grays?
If so, how?
What I'm hoping, of course, is that I can buy a couple of SIMMs cheap
and see much better images on the screen.
This video display stuff is pretty odd -- I noticed the other day that with
the color monitor set to Thousands, graphics applications could only display
32 shades of gray. Yet with the Control Panel set to 256 (Colors or Grays),
applications like PhotoShop can display the full 256 grayscale range. (I'm
assuming with 24-bit, it will display any possible combination of RGB values.)
One of the mysteries of QuickDraw, I guess.
Thanks for any pointers,
Russ Clark

I need some help with a problem I'm having with an SE/30. The other day
the internal screen lost its horizontal sweep (I assume since it now only
has a vertical line for a display). At first, it wasn't a problem since I
also use an external Pivot LE. Unfortunately, today when I started my Mac
it seems to be booting onto the internal screen instead of the external
one. Oops, that doesn't work too well.
What I want to know is 1) is there any way I can make the SE/30 boot onto
the external monitor without having access to the internal one and 2) if
I can't boot onto the external monitor where can I buy a new or
remanufactured internal monitor?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
